Cultural Safety and Learning
Toowoomba Grammar School is committed to creating a culturally safe, respectful and inclusive environment where all students, families and staff feel valued and supported.
This commitment is embedded across the School, including within the curriculum. All students in Years 7 to 12 participate in learning that builds awareness and understanding of First Nations histories, cultures and perspectives, as well as broader concepts of identity, diversity and responsibility.
Through ongoing education and meaningful engagement with cultural protocols, we ensure our community is informed, inclusive and culturally responsive.
Program in Action
Our Indigenous Education Program provides a range of opportunities that enrich each student’s experience and support their development both at school and beyond.
Key initiatives include:
- Indigenous Education Common Room and dedicated meeting space
- Indigenous Education Tutoring Program
- Cultural retreats and experiences, including painting, dance and storytelling
- Celebration of significant dates such as NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week
- Learning about culturally significant sites connected to the School and local area
These experiences help students build confidence, strengthen identity and develop a balanced approach to school and life.
Our Purpose
The Indigenous Education Program is dedicated to empowering First Nations students to broaden perspectives and contribute to meaningful, generational growth. At the same time, the program supports staff, students and the wider community in building a culturally safe and inclusive environment; one where diversity is respected and every student is supported to succeed.
Meet the team
Mr Scott Gale – TGS Indigenous Education Coordinator
Mr Scott Gale leads the Indigenous Education Program at TGS, providing a strong support framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.
A proud Wiradjuri man from Central New South Wales, Scott is passionate about fostering cultural pride and strengthening understanding across the School community. He works closely with students, staff and families to ensure a culturally safe environment and meaningful educational outcomes.
Scott also supports the integration of culturally aware programs within the curriculum and brings extensive experience in high-level sport as the Head Coach of Rugby at TGS.
Mr Brady Forde - Indigenous Education Mentor
A Toowoomba Grammar School Old Boy (2019–23), Mr Brady Forde returns to support current students as Indigenous Education Mentor.
Drawing on his own experiences at TGS, Brady provides support across pastoral, cultural and academic areas, helping students feel connected, supported and confident within the School community.
A proud Kamilaroi man, he encourages students to take pride in their heritage and play an active role in sharing culture and strengthening understanding across the School.
Reconciliation Action Plan
Toowoomba Grammar School has developed a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in partnership with Narragunnawali, a national organisation supporting reconciliation in education.
The RAP is a formal commitment to strengthening relationships, deepening respect and creating opportunities across the School. It outlines clear actions and goals that are reviewed and refined over time to ensure meaningful and lasting impact.
Cultural Safety and Protocols
Toowoomba Grammar School has taken initiative into fostering a cultural safe, respectful and inclusive environment where all students, families and staff feel valued and supported. Recognising First Nation peoples, cultures and past while promoting the education of cultural safety and engaging and adhering to cultural protocols. Through ongoing education and meaningful engagement with cultural protocols, we ensure our community is informed, inclusive and culturally responsive. In doing so, we create a welcoming environment that celebrates diversity and gives every student a genuine sense of belonging at Toowoomba Grammar School.
As our commitment to cultural safety continues to grow, the introduction of cultural safety and protocols has been embedded into the TGS curriculum. All students from Years 7 to 12 participate in this program, building awareness and understanding of important topics such as identity, diversity and responsibility within cultural contexts and the wider community.
Yalari Partnership
Toowoomba Grammar School is proud to partner with Yalari, a not-for-profit organisation providing boarding scholarships for Indigenous students from regional and remote communities.
As a foundation partner since 2006, TGS continues to support Yalari scholars to access quality education and thrive within our School community.
