For Nathan Cook (2003-08), the connection to Toowoomba Grammar School extends well beyond his years as a student.
Now based in Sydney, Nathan is the General Manager of Prudence Rehab, a national occupational rehabilitation provider. His career journey has taken him through the legal and insurance industries, including a significant period with the Suncorp Group, before ultimately relocating to Sydney for his current role.
While much has changed since his days at TGS, some memories remain as vivid as ever.
"As a young boy, I remember watching the First XV and First XI play on Mills and Old Boys Oval and wanting to be out there myself one day," Nathan said. "To then grow up and have the opportunity to play on those fields was incredibly special."
Like many Old Boys, however, it is the friendships formed at TGS that have had the most lasting impact.
"The friendships I made at TGS are still some of the most important relationships in my life today."
Nathan's connection to the School remains strong. His nephew, Ed, is currently a TGS student, his brother serves as President of the TGS Old Boys' Association, and his father continues to be involved with the School's rugby program.
Those family ties, coupled with a desire to give back, played a key role in his decision to help lead this year's Sydney reunion.
"It probably started with a strong word from the President, who also happens to be my brother," Nathan laughed. "But it also made me realise the importance of giving back to a community that has given me so much and helping connect Old Boys of all ages."
For Nathan, events such as the upcoming Old Boys Reunions are about maintaining connections to a significant chapter of life, particularly for those who now live far from Toowoomba.
"Especially for those of us who live away from home, these events help us stay connected to what was a really meaningful period of our lives. They provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet fellow Old Boys and maintain those ties to the School."
On 10 October, Old Boys in Sydney and Brisbane will come together for an evening of connection, camaraderie and celebration. Nathan hopes to see Old Boys from all generations represented.
"Whether you graduated recently or many years ago, I'd encourage you to come along. It's a great opportunity to reconnect with the School, catch up with old mates and strengthen the TGS network."
