Grammar Boys Ace Volleyball Selections2nd March 2021
There’s no sand and surf in Toowoomba, but that hasn’t stopped two Toowoomba Grammar School volleyballers from being selected for the National Beach Volleyball Championships to be played at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast from April 26-29.
Year 12 student and ongoing national representative, Ben Hood has been joined by Year 8 student, Will Smith, who will have his first hit out at representative level.
The boys had to perform at three selection trials to make the cut. Hood’s part of the U17 team of eight (selected from 15 hopefuls) while Smith was one of 16 players selected in the U14s, with 24 boys vying for that team.
This is Hood’s third year representing Queensland at the National Beach Volleyball Championships, his team has placed third on both previous occasions.
Two other TGS volleyballers, Hussein Yusaf (Year 10) and Andrew Byrnes (Year 12) have been selected as shadows and will train with the teams on the sandstorm courts at the QSAC in Brisbane every fortnight leading into the competition.
Beach Volleyball is one of the country’s most rapidly growing sports, becoming more popular each year. Players need to be capable with all skills of the game, making it a perfect segway to traditional volleyball by building well-rounded players.
