TGS Swimmer Set Australian Record6th October 2020
Toowoomba Grammar School Swimming Club member, Isaac Cooper is ranked the fastest 16YO 50m Backstroke swimmer in Australia after smashing four Queensland records and swimming the fastest U16 50m Backstroke in Queensland history at the Queensland Short Course Championships in Brisbane.
The 16-year-old, Year 12 student recorded an incredible 24.37 to get under the 25-second threshold for the first time ever in Queensland history.
He also now holds the new Australian Age Record for the U16 50m backstroke which was previously 24.73 set by Alex Quach in 2017.
Cooper’s PB was 25.09 coming into the meet which he recorded at the trials in August and claimed the Queensland Age Record and the Queensland All Comers Record based on that result. He has gone on to shave .72 off that time in his eye-catching performance, which has earnt him the number one ranking in Australia.
This was one of four of Queensland records that Isaac broke. The others include 100m Individual Medley (56.39), the 50m Freestyle (22.43) and the 100m Backstroke (53.12).
TGS Swimming Club members put in a stellar performance at the Championships bringing home eight gold, one silver and four bronze medals with an 85% PB conversion rate.
The medallists included:
Isaac Cooper – Four gold, 1 silver (200m Backstroke) and 1 bronze (100m Freestyle)
Jude Youens – Gold (15YO 50m Freestyle) Gold (100m Freestyle), Gold (100m Butterfly) and Bronze (200m Freestyle)
Juert Eerkens – Gold (13YO 50m Backstroke)
Keeleigh Cauley-Gleeson – Bronze (15YO 100m Individual Medley), Bronze (100m Butterfly)
