New Toowoomba Grammar School Headmaster Appointed

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Toowoomba Grammar School, I am delighted to announce that Dr John Kinniburgh has been appointed as the School’s 16th Headmaster, commencing from 1 January 2021.

Dr Kinniburgh is currently Deputy Headmaster and Head of Secondary School at Prince Alfred College, Adelaide, an all boys’, Early Learning to Year 12, day and boarding school. During his four year tenure at Prince Alfred College, Dr Kinniburgh has made significant contributions to the areas of pastoral care and wellbeing, student leadership, teaching and learning. Prior to this, he spent four years in England at Wellington College, a leading co-educational day and boarding school in the United Kingdom, initially as Head of Geography and then as Assistant Head of Teaching Schools. Before moving to England, Dr Kinniburgh taught at The King’s School in Sydney for sixteen years, one of Australia’s premier boys’ schools. During this time he was an academic leader, worked in boarding and was involved in various co-curricular activities.

Dr Kinniburgh’s qualifications include a PhD in Education from Macquarie University, a Master of Science degree in Environmental Change Management from the University of Oxford, a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Sydney and a Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of New England. His academic achievements have been complemented by success on the sports field as both a coach and a player, fuelling his belief in the importance of co-curricular activities for boys, whether it is music, the arts or sport.

Dr Kinniburgh’s appointment follows an extensive recruitment process using an executive search firm that attracted high quality candidates from around Australia. The Board of Trustees was impressed by Dr Kinniburgh’s energy and passion for boys’ education, particularly his focus on the development of character and self-worth, and preparing boys for the contribution they can make to society throughout their lives. He is deeply committed to a well-rounded education, and values excellent teaching that enables each boy to achieve his personal best. Having spent his whole career in boarding schools, he is excited by Toowoomba Grammar School’s thriving boarding community.

Dr Kinniburgh was raised in country New South Wales and he will be joined by his wife Jo, and their 3 children, Charlie, Eliza and Archie. They are looking forward to settling in Toowoomba, and building strong connections with the School, as well as the local and regional community.

Dr Kinniburgh will succeed Mr Peter Hauser, who retires at the end of 2020. The Board of Trustees thank Mr Hauser for the outstanding leadership he has provided to the School since 2003, and the enduring legacy he will leave. The Board will work with Mr Hauser to ensure there is a seamless transition at the end of the year.

Please join the Board of Trustees in warmly welcoming Dr Kinniburgh and his family to our school community in January 2021.
