Medal Haul for Grammar Volleyballers30th October 2019
The Toowoomba Grammar School Volleyball program is going from strength to strength with a string of success at State and National levels over recent weeks.
The Year 8 Volleyball team won the Queensland Volleyball Junior Schools Cup in Brisbane last weekend (October 20) after making it through to the grand final undefeated. It was a thrilling end to a tough two days of competition, with the boys playing six games, winning each match 2-0 before taking on McGregor State High School for the gold medal where they secured a 25-23, 25-20 victory.
Year 8 student, Hussein Yusaf was named Most Valuable Player of the Division Two Competition.
It’s capped of a big year for Hussein, who had just returned from representing Queensland in the U14 team at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships at the AIS in Canberra from September 29 to 5 October. They played eight games at the Championships, making it through to the finals where they unfortunately went down to Victoria 0-3 in very closely contested sets (25-21, 27-25, 25-15).
Hussein was joined by fellow TGS volleyball star, Ben Hood at the AJVC. Ben was representing Queensland in the U17 division. They also made it through to the grand final after playing nine qualifying matches. They went down to New South Wales in another hard-fought match 1-4 (28-30, 25-21, 25-22, 26-24).
Both boys were thrilled to be crowned Australian runners-up in their respective age groups.
Ben is now commencing his preparation for the Beach volleyball circuit and Hussein is continuing his training with Toowoomba Grammar School’s volleyball program as well as the QAS (Queensland Academy of Sport) elite development squad which is hosted by TGS on Monday evenings.
The next phase for the TGS volleyball program is preparation for the AVSC (Australian Volleyball Schools Cup) to be held on the Gold Coast from 7-14 December. This competition is a stepping stone for our development leading into the GPS season in Term 1.
