Toowoomba Grammar Promotes Mental Health5th June 2019
“It’s okay to not be okay” is the message that Toowoomba Grammar School and Lumsden Psychology shared with the local community at a free Mental Health event on Wednesday, 5 June.
Mental Health Advocate, Beyond Blue Ambassador and radio presenter, Craig Hamilton shared his experiences of living with Bipolar Disorder, breaking down the stigma associated with mental illness, signs to be aware of and coping strategies. He was joined by Sober in the Country founder and Motivational Speaker, Shanna Whan.
Mr Hamilton also addressed Toowoomba Grammar School Year 12 students in a special presentation on Wednesday afternoon.
TGS believes it is extremely important for our young men to be aware of mental illness, particularly in light of the latest statistics from Beyond Blue which show that one in eight men will experience depression and one in five will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives. Men make up an average six out of every eight suicides every single day in Australia. The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is nearly double the national road toll.
Everyone’s mental health varies during their life in response to different stressors and experiences and effectively managing your mental health can give you significant improvements in your quality of life, increase your capacity to support your family and friends, and let you perform at your best.
