As an all-boys’ school we appreciate the fundamental importance of playing sport and enjoying the experience

Emphasis is placed on quality coaching, skill development, active involvement and the promotion of good sportsmanship.

Our Prep to Year 12 sport strategy sees all boys participate in sport. Game skills are introduced from a young age and lead to more formal participation in the sporting program.

GPS sport

Our Years 5 to 12 students have the opportunity to participate in the GPS competition. We compete against the other GPS member schools; Nudgee College, Brisbane State High School, Brisbane Grammar School, The Southport School, Ipswich Grammar School, Anglican Church Grammar (Churchie), St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace, and Brisbane Boys’ College.

We enter teams of all experience levels in:

Term 1 – Cricket, Swimming, Volleyball
Term 2 – Football (Soccer), Tennis, Cross Country
Term 3 – Chess (Friday night competition), Basketball, Rugby
Term 4 – Track & Field

Training for GPS sports occurs on TGS grounds, weekday mornings and afternoons. The competition is played on Saturdays on a home and away basis with TGS teams travelling by bus to competitor schools, and families are encouraged to attend.

For those boys who excel at a particular sport, the GPS competition is rated the highest level in high school sport, providing a pathway for many boys interested in professional sport careers.

The boys are also presented with representative sport opportunities in a wide range of sports for U12 – Open Age. This is managed by Darling Downs School Sport and supported by TGS.

Local club sport

Junior School

We enter TGS teams for Prep to Year 4 students in Toowoomba Club sport for Rugby, Football (Soccer), Basketball and Futsal. Training is most often held during class time or straight after school on the TGS campus (sport and age level dependent), with most of the games held on a Saturday.

Senior School

Senior School teams are entered into the local competition for volleyball and basketball.

TGS Club Basketball Program

Taking place in Terms 2 and 3, the Toowoomba Basketball Association Club Basketball Competition represents the perfect element of continuity and interconnection between our Term 1 tournament play and our ultimate participation in the GPS Basketball Competition in Term 3.

‘Club’ provides TGS basketballers from Years 2 to 12 with an avenue to participate and improve upon their skills in a fun and developmentally-focused environment. Continuity is provided by appointing the same coaches to these club teams as those leading our GPS teams and incorporating the TGS basketball style of play.

TGS Basketball has over 100 participants with multiple squads in Under 9 through to U19 in Divisions 1 and 2, and incorporates players, coaches and teams from both our ‘Performance’ and ‘All-In’ pathways. Our 1st V Squad participate in the Toowoomba Men’s A-Grade Competition on Monday evenings, with other boys participating on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings.

TGS Club Volleyball Program

TGS Volleyball is involved with two club programs, the Toowoomba Titans representative and the TGS Blazers academy.

Toowoomba Titans representative provides players with the opportunity to trial, train and compete at a high level on a regular basis during Terms 1 and 2. Teams are selected for a 15-week season of weekly training and matches, plus nomination into two major Volleyball Queensland competitions: the Dragons Chalice and the State Championships. Levels are by age - U15, U17 and U19.

The TGS Blazers academy teams are year-group based from 7-11 and aims to develop teams throughout Terms 3 and 4 as a component of the GPS pre-season preparation. Teams are nominated into the Toowoomba Premier League competition held at TGS on Tuesday nights. This is a crucial element in developing game sense and awareness. The main competition runs for 12 weeks with an increase in training sessions during Term 4.

Swimming

All boys from Prep to Year 6 use the School’s indoor Aquatic Centre on a regular basis.

Boys from Prep to Year 3 are involved within school time in the Learn-to-Swim program each week of the year and there is no additional charge for this instruction. Boys from Years 4 to 6 use the Aquatic Centre at various times throughout the year as part of their PE program.

The Aquatic Centre is also used for squad training and both the Infants (Under 5 to Under 8 years) and Primary (Under 9 to Under 12 years) swimming carnivals.
